At my last place, management was always rewarding little successes way too early and too often.
The folks would already be planning their reward, before they came up with an improvement.
It undermined the idea of CONTINUOUS and the overall mindset and approach of Lean.
It was unfortunate because they were glimpses of the power of the group and the knowledge of the process the folks had.
It was, to me, as the Production Manager, demeaning, it made the folks look like trained pets, not the valuable contributors they are.
This behavior also, diluted the fact that these improvements, incremental or otherwise, were ultimately necessary to assure the businesses health, financial survival and in turn their jobs.
Trading Pizza Parties for cost reductions is trite and not necessary. People are intelligent enough to understand what is at stake.
Rewards are fine, in my mind very necessary, but in the right context.
